The island is also known as Balikkallu in some accounts.

Its importance is strongly tied to Malabar's maritime history. Velliyamkallu is associated with Kunjali Marakkar and the naval resistance of the Zamorin of Kozhikode against Portuguese forces, giving the isolated rocks a significance beyond their scenic appearance. Older Keralam Tourism information describes reaching the island by boat from Payyoli, with the journey itself offering a broad view of the coast and open sea.

Because Velliyamkallu is offshore and the surrounding rocks can be hazardous, access depends on sea, weather and local boat arrangements. Visitors should use legitimate operators and avoid attempting a crossing in unsuitable conditions. The island pairs naturally with Payyoli Beach and the Kunjali Marakkar heritage circuit.
