Vimalagiri Cathedral

Vimalagiri Cathedral, officially the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral, is a prominent Gothic-style church at Keezhukunnu in Kottayam city. Keralam Tourism identifies the church locally as Angathattu Palli and highlights its 172-foot spire, stained-glass work and detailed interiors. The cathedral serves as the principal church of the Diocese of Vijayapuram and remains an active centre of Catholic worship.

Its vertical Gothic form creates a striking contrast with the lower, timber-rich traditional churches found elsewhere in Kottayam, making it particularly interesting to visitors comparing different phases of Keralam’s Christian architecture. An annual feast is held in December, when the cathedral sees increased devotional activity. The site is close to central Kottayam and the railway station, so it is convenient to add to a city heritage itinerary alongside Cheriapally, Valiyapally, CMS College and the Old Seminary.

Visitors should be considerate during Mass and other services and avoid intrusive photography inside worship areas.
