Edakkal Caves

Edakkal Caves is one of Wayanad's best-known archaeological and heritage attractions, located on the Ambukuthi Hills near Edakkal and Ambalavayal in Sulthan Bathery taluk. Despite the name, the site is better understood as a pair of natural rock shelters formed by massive boulders and fissures. Their importance comes from the extensive engravings found on the rock surfaces, including human and animal figures, symbols and other motifs associated with different periods of early habitation.

DTPC Wayanad notes that the site was brought to wider attention in 1895 and that some engravings are linked to the Stone Age. Visiting the caves involves an uphill approach through Wayanad's green hill country, so the journey is part of the experience as much as the archaeological site itself. The elevated setting also opens attractive views across the surrounding landscape.

Edakkal Caves is especially rewarding for travellers interested in prehistory, archaeology, heritage photography and the cultural story of Wayanad. Nearby Ambalavayal also houses the Wayanad Heritage Museum, where artefacts from archaeological sites in the district help place the caves in a broader historical context.
