Why this place stands out

Erumeli Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is a major Ayyappa pilgrimage centre in Kottayam, closely linked with Sabarimala, Petta Thullal and the neighbouring Vavar Juma Masjid.

Erumeli Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is one of the principal pilgrimage landmarks of Erumeli in Kanjirappally taluk, Kottayam district. Dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, the temple is deeply connected with the traditional Sabarimala pilgrimage and becomes exceptionally busy during the Mandala–Makaravilakku season. Keralam Tourism highlights Erumeli’s Valiyambalam and Kochambalam traditions and the celebrated Petta Thullal, a vigorous ritual procession performed by pilgrims before continuing toward Sabarimala.

An equally important part of the local pilgrimage culture is the proximity of Vavar Juma Masjid, which many devotees also visit in remembrance of the legendary friendship between Ayyappa and Vavar. The result is a destination where ritual, folklore and interfaith symbolism are experienced together in a compact town setting. Outside peak season, the temple is easier to visit and the surrounding pilgrimage geography is easier to understand.

During festival months, travellers should prepare for crowds, traffic controls, limited parking and strict temple customs.
