Idukki Arch Dam

Idukki Arch Dam is one of Keralam’s best-known engineering landmarks, built across the Periyar River between the Kuravan and Kurathi hills in Idukki district. The concrete double-curvature arch dam forms part of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project together with the Cheruthoni and Kulamavu dams. These structures create the vast Idukki reservoir, with water ultimately supporting hydroelectric generation at Moolamattom.

The dam is remarkable not only for its engineering but also for its setting in the steep Western Ghats. Visitors encounter reservoir waters, forested slopes and imposing infrastructure within the same landscape. Keralam Tourism and the Idukki district administration both treat the dam as a major attraction, and the wider reservoir area can include viewpoints and boating experiences subject to current operations and tourism arrangements.

Public access to dam structures is controlled and may be available only on notified days or under specific security conditions. Visitors should therefore check current official access information before planning a trip, especially if walking across or entering secured dam areas is the main purpose. Hill View Park, Cheruthoni Dam, Idukki Park and the wildlife sanctuary make useful nearby additions to an Idukki sightseeing circuit.
