Kanhangad is one of the principal towns of Kasaragod district and an important transport and commercial centre in northern Keralam. Keralam Tourism describes the town as strategically placed between Mangaluru and Kannur and notes a landscape of coconut palms, hills and streams, with the Arayi River passing through the area. Kanhangad is also valuable to travellers because several notable attractions are concentrated nearby: Hosdurg Fort, Nithyananda Ashram, Anandashram, Manjapothi Hills and important temples can all form part of a local circuit.

The town is associated with Theyyam and other North Malabar folk forms, while the Keralam Lalithakala Akademi adds an institutional art connection. Kanhangad itself is therefore best understood as both a destination and a practical base for exploring southern and eastern Kasaragod.
