Kottayil Kovilakam Heritage Precinct

Kottayil Kovilakam Heritage Precinct is a historically important area at Chendamangalam in Ernakulam district, Kerala, within the wider Muziris Heritage Project. The hillock is associated with the former Villarvattom Swaroopam, a local ruling house, and the surrounding landscape preserves an exceptional cluster of religious and cultural monuments. Kerala Tourism highlights the presence of a Hindu temple, Christian church, mosque and the Chendamangalam Synagogue within a short distance of one another, together with a protected Jewish cemetery containing Hebrew inscriptions.

This close physical relationship between four faith traditions has made Kottayil Kovilakam one of the strongest symbols of interfaith coexistence in the Muziris region. The precinct is also tied to the history of Jewish settlement in Chendamangalam and to the waterways that once connected this area with the wider maritime trade network of ancient Muziris. Visitors can explore the site as part of a heritage walk linking the synagogue, cemetery, religious monuments and nearby Paliam museums.
