Munroe Island, locally known as Munrothuruthu or Mundrothuruthu, is a celebrated backwater destination in Kollam district, Keralam. The island settlement lies around the meeting zone of the Kallada River and Ashtamudi Lake, creating a landscape of canals, lagoons, low-lying homesteads and lush tropical vegetation. The place is named after Colonel John Munro, whose association with the region is remembered in its modern name.
Munroe Island is especially known for small-canoe journeys through narrow waterways that larger boats cannot enter. These cruises offer close views of village houses, coconut groves, fishing activity, coir work and everyday life beside the water. Kayaking and cycling are also popular ways to experience the area at an unhurried pace.
