Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the principal visitor zones of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, located near Muthanga in Sulthan Bathery taluk. The forest landscape includes deciduous and semi-evergreen habitats that support elephants, deer, monkeys, birds, butterflies and many smaller species, while tigers and other large carnivores occur in the wider protected landscape. Muthanga is especially important geographically because Wayanad's forests connect with the protected areas of Nagarhole and Bandipur in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu, creating a much larger wildlife corridor across the Nilgiri Biosphere region.

Visitor access is managed by the Forest Department, and organised vehicle safaris provide a controlled way to experience the sanctuary without entering sensitive zones independently. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed; the value of a safari also lies in seeing the forest structure, animal tracks, birdlife and changing light within a living ecosystem. Travellers should follow all forest rules, avoid feeding or disturbing animals, and check current safari availability before arrival because schedules and access can change with weather, conservation measures or wildlife movement.
