About Paliam Nalukettu

Paliam Nalukettu is a traditional courtyard residence at Chendamangalam in Ernakulam district, Kerala, preserved as part of the Muziris Heritage Project. Kerala Tourism describes it as the historic tharavad of the Paliam noble family, where generations of a matrilineal joint household lived together. The present structure is associated with the late 18th century and follows the classic nalukettu plan: four blocks arranged around an open central courtyard or nadumuttam.

The arrangement of halls, kitchen, dining spaces, private rooms and family areas reflects the social organisation and daily life of the period. The museum interpretation focuses especially on the role of women in the matrilineal Paliam household, along with domestic rituals, architecture, vessels, lamps and other aspects of traditional living. Unlike Paliam Palace, which emphasises political and administrative history, Paliam Nalukettu gives visitors a more intimate view of household culture and Kerala’s built heritage.

The two museums are best visited together.
