About Paradesi Synagogue

Paradesi Synagogue stands in Jew Town, Mattancherry, in Ernakulam district, Kerala, beside the historic Mattancherry Palace area. Kerala Tourism dates the synagogue to 1568 and describes it as the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth. It was damaged during conflict in the 17th century and reconstructed after the Dutch gained control of Kochi.

The main prayer hall is known for its Belgian glass chandeliers, brass-railed pulpit and distinctive blue-and-white hand-painted floor tiles brought from China. The complex also preserves important objects connected with the long history of Jewish settlement and trade in Kerala, including historic copper plates and a notable clock tower. The synagogue remains a place of religious significance, so visitors should observe local rules, dress and access arrangements respectfully.

Together with Jew Town’s antique shops and nearby Mattancherry Palace, it forms a central part of Kochi’s multicultural heritage trail.
