Why this place stands out

Sulthan Bathery Jain Temple is a protected 13th-century granite Jain monument in Wayanad, Keralam, associated with Vijayanagara architecture and the later military history of Tipu Sultan. It is a key heritage site in Sulthan Bathery.

Sulthan Bathery Jain Temple is an important medieval heritage monument in Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad district, Keralam. DTPC Wayanad and Keralam Tourism identify the granite temple as a 13th-century structure associated with the strong Jain presence that once existed in the region. Its architecture is linked with the Vijayanagara tradition, with stone pillars, a slab roof and restrained decorative carving.

The site later became connected with the military history of Mysore: Tipu Sultan is believed to have used the temple premises as an artillery or ammunition base, an episode commonly linked with the evolution of the town’s name from the idea of a “battery.” Sulthan Bathery was earlier known as Ganapathi Vattam and had a notable Jain settlement. Today the temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and is visited for its archaeology, architecture and regional history rather than as an active everyday shrine. It is easily combined with other heritage attractions around Sulthan Bathery and Ambalavayal.
