Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary

Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, widely known as Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, lies near Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district, Kerala. Established in 1983, it is recognised by Kerala Tourism as the state’s first bird sanctuary and covers roughly 25 square kilometres of lowland forest near branches of the Periyar River.

The sanctuary’s mix of evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous and riparian habitats supports an exceptionally diverse bird community, with species such as Malabar trogon, Ceylon frogmouth, hornbills and many other forest and water birds recorded in the region. Its reputation is closely linked to ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, who recognised the area’s importance for bird conservation.

Early morning is generally the most rewarding time for bird activity, and guided birding can help visitors identify calls and species. Thattekkad also fits naturally into an eastern Ernakulam itinerary with Bhoothathankettu, Inchathotty and Kuttampuzha.
