Thevally Palace stands on the bank of Ashtamudi Lake at Thevally in Kollam city, Keralam. Keralam Heritage records that the palace was built between 1811 and 1819 during the reign of Gowri Parvati Bayi of Travancore. The building combines British, Dutch and Portuguese architectural influences and uses traditional materials such as laterite and lime plaster.
Travancore rulers used the palace during visits to Kollam and for meetings with British Residents, making it an important reminder of the political history of the princely state. A Sastha temple is also associated with the palace complex, while the lake-facing location shows how waterways once formed a principal approach to elite buildings in Kollam. The premises have been used by government and NCC-related institutions, so public access may not extend to all areas.
Even when viewed as a heritage landmark from its permitted surroundings, Thevally Palace adds an important royal and colonial layer to an Ashtamudi Lake itinerary.
