Vasco da Gama Square

Vasco da Gama Square runs along the waterfront at Fort Kochi in Ernakulam district, Kerala, and is closely associated with the city’s iconic Chinese fishing nets. Kerala Tourism identifies the square as one of the best places to watch the cantilevered nets being lowered and raised from the shore. The promenade also reflects Fort Kochi’s maritime character: visitors can look across the water, observe fishing activity and experience the busy yet leisurely atmosphere of the old port quarter.

Small stalls and food outlets in the area add a local flavour, particularly later in the day when the waterfront becomes a popular place for a stroll. The square sits within easy walking distance of Fort Kochi Beach, Princess Street, St. Francis Church and several other heritage attractions.

Rather than being a single enclosed monument, it works as an open public space from which the history, fishing traditions and coastal life of Kochi can be experienced together.
