Vasco House

Vasco House stands on Rose Street in Fort Kochi, Ernakulam district, and is regarded as one of the area’s early surviving Portuguese-style residences. Kerala Tourism describes the building as more than five centuries old and notes the tradition that Vasco da Gama stayed here during visits to Kochi, including the period before his death in 1524. The association should be understood as a longstanding historical tradition rather than as a fully documented residential record.

Architecturally, the house is notable for European-style glass-paned windows, balcony-verandahs and the domestic form that helped introduce a new building vocabulary to colonial Kochi. It faces toward the St. Francis Church area and fits naturally into a walking route through Fort Kochi’s compact heritage quarter.

The property has also been used as accommodation, so interior access should not be assumed simply because the exterior is a tourism landmark. Visitors can appreciate the building from the surrounding street while combining it with nearby churches, colonial structures, galleries and waterfront sights.
