Vizhinjam Lighthouse stands near the Kovalam beach resort area in Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram district, Keralam, overlooking the Arabian Sea and a coast with a long maritime history. The Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships records that Vizhinjam was a flourishing port in the 18th and 19th centuries. A day-mark beacon was provided in 1960, and the present major lighthouse was completed in 1972 and commissioned into service in May of that year.
Its red-and-white tower has since become one of the defining visual symbols of Kovalam. The lighthouse tourism facility includes landscaped areas and visitor amenities, while the headland offers a broader understanding of the relationship between the historic harbour, fishing coast and modern beach resort. Travellers should check current opening and ticket arrangements through the official lighthouse service before visiting, as access to operational lighthouse structures can be regulated for safety and maintenance.
