About Munakkal Beach
Munakkal Beach is located at Azhikode on the Arabian Sea coast, about seven kilometres from Kodungallur town. Kerala Tourism identifies it as the largest beach in Thrissur district and includes it within the wider Muziris Heritage Project landscape. The beach was redeveloped through a tsunami rehabilitation initiative and has been equipped with visitor infrastructure such as a long walkway, wheelchair-access features, toilets, food areas and shelters.
A casuarina forest created by the Kerala Forest Department adds shade and greenery behind the open shoreline. The Azhikode setting also carries a strong maritime identity: the nearby river mouth, fishing traditions and links to the historic Muziris region give the visit a heritage dimension beyond a simple beach outing. Munakkal works well for relaxed walks, family time, coastal photography and sunset viewing, and it is also included in Thrissur’s official water-tourism circuit.
Visitors should follow local sea-safety instructions, particularly during rough weather, and use the developed access paths to help protect the beach and dune environment.
