Marthoma Pontifical Shrine, Azhikode

Marthoma Pontifical Shrine in Azhikode, near Kodungallur in Thrissur district, is one of Kerala’s most significant Christian pilgrimage sites and forms part of the Muziris heritage landscape. Kerala Tourism records the tradition that St. Thomas the Apostle arrived at Kodungallur in 52 CE and established an early Christian community in this region.

The present shrine is especially known for a relic associated with the Apostle that was brought from Ortona in Italy and preserved behind the altar. Its riverside setting near the Periyar and its connection with ancient Muziris give the destination both spiritual and historical appeal. Visitors interested in Kerala’s maritime history, early Christianity and inter-cultural exchange can combine the shrine with other heritage attractions around Kodungallur.
