Chettuva Backwaters

Chettuva Backwaters are a tranquil network of waterways around Chettuva in coastal Thrissur district, Kerala, about 10 kilometres south of Guruvayur. Kerala Tourism describes a landscape enriched by mangroves, islets, Chinese fishing nets, an estuary, birdlife and the historic Chettuva Fort area. The backwaters extend from the Enamakkal Lake system toward the Arabian Sea, with the Canoli Canal contributing to the broader water network shared with Enamavu.

A boat trip is the most rewarding way to experience Chettuva. Local cruises may use shikaras, motorboats or houseboats, giving travellers views of coconut palms, mangrove vegetation and working-waterfront scenes such as fishing, mussel harvesting and toddy tapping. The destination is particularly appealing to photographers, birdwatchers and visitors who prefer a quieter alternative to Kerala’s more heavily visited backwater hubs.

Chettuva also fits naturally into a coastal Thrissur itinerary with Guruvayur, Enamavu and nearby beaches. Water levels, boat availability and conditions can vary seasonally, especially during the monsoon, so visitors should use established local operators and check conditions before setting out.
