Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the rain-shadow region of Idukki district near Marayoor and the Keralam–Tamil Nadu border. Unlike the lush evergreen image often associated with Keralam, Chinnar contains dry deciduous forest, scrub and riverine habitats that support a distinctive range of plants and animals. Keralam Tourism highlights the sanctuary as an important habitat for the endangered grizzled giant squirrel, along with elephants and many other wildlife species.

The Pambar and Chinnar river systems, rocky terrain and seasonal changes add to the sanctuary’s ecological character. One of its best-known visitor experiences is the regulated forest trek toward Thoovanam Waterfalls, undertaken through authorised ecotourism arrangements rather than independent entry into protected areas. Chinnar also fits naturally into a Marayoor itinerary that includes sandalwood landscapes and archaeological sites.

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, and visitors should follow Forest Department instructions, avoid disturbing animals, carry back waste and treat the sanctuary primarily as a conservation area rather than an amusement attraction.
