Achankovil River and Backwaters

Achankovil River is a major southern Kerala river associated with the forested Achankovil region of Kollam district before continuing across Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha. DTPC Kollam notes that the river is formed from the convergence of mountain streams including Rishimala, Pasukidamettu and Ramakkaltheri rivers. In its upper reaches, the waterway is closely tied to dense Western Ghats forest, wildlife habitat and the ancient Achankovil Sastha pilgrimage landscape.

Farther west, the river becomes part of the broader lowland and backwater geography that characterises central and southern Kerala. For visitors, the Achankovil stretch is less about a single developed viewpoint and more about experiencing a river within a deep forest setting, with temple heritage and biodiversity nearby. Seasonal rainfall can greatly change the river's flow, so travellers should use established roads, viewpoints or locally authorised access and avoid entering fast-moving water during monsoon conditions.
