Ammannur Chachu Chakyar Smaraka Gurukulam

Ammannur Chachu Chakyar Smaraka Gurukulam is a respected centre for the study, practice and performance of Kutiyattam in Irinjalakuda, Thrissur district, Kerala. Kerala Tourism describes the institution as closely connected with the Ammannur Chakyar family, hereditary practitioners and custodians of the art. The family settled in Irinjalakuda in the nineteenth century, and the Gurukulam later developed as a formal centre supporting the continuation of this demanding theatrical tradition.

The institution preserves old manuscripts and other material that illuminate Kutiyattam techniques and supports research as well as training. Its cultural importance is strengthened by the international recognition given to Kutiyattam, which UNESCO proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001. Located in Irinjalakuda near the wider Koodalmanikyam cultural landscape, the Gurukulam is especially meaningful for students of theatre, Sanskrit performance, gesture, music and Kerala temple arts.
