Bekal Fort

Bekal Fort stands on the Arabian Sea coast at Bekal in Pallikkara, Kasaragod district, and is among Keralam’s largest and best-preserved historic forts. The present fort is closely associated with the Keladi Nayakas and the political struggles that later brought the region under Mysore and British control. Built mainly as a defensive stronghold, the laterite complex includes massive walls, observation areas, a stepped water tank, passages and openings designed for coastal defence.

Its elevated position gives visitors broad views across the sea and the surrounding Bekal landscape. The fort is also closely linked with Bekal Beach, making the area especially rewarding for travellers who want to combine Keralam heritage, architecture and a coastal experience in one visit. Walking through the ramparts and open grounds reveals both the military character of the structure and the dramatic relationship between the fort and the Arabian Sea.
