British Residency

The British Residency stands at Asramam in Kollam, close to the Ashtamudi backwaters and the city’s large public recreation grounds. Government heritage material records the building as a major reminder of Kollam’s role in the political history of Travancore during the early nineteenth century. The structure is associated with the British Resident and later became the Government Guest House.

Its architecture is notable for the meeting of colonial classical forms, broad verandahs and Kerala-style tiled roofing, creating a landmark very different from the district’s temples and coastal monuments. The surrounding Asramam area adds to the visitor experience with green space, backwater views and nearby heritage attractions. As the building remains in official use, visitors should not assume unrestricted interior access; viewing from permitted public areas and respecting government premises is the appropriate way to experience the site.
