About Dharmadam Island

Dharmadam Island is a small, green coastal island lying just off Dharmadam Beach near Thalassery in Kannur district, Kerala. Kerala Tourism describes the uninhabited island as being roughly 100 metres from the mainland, with palms and dense vegetation covering a laterite outcrop. Water surrounds the island from the Arabian Sea and adjoining river channels, giving it a distinctive setting that is easy to appreciate from the beach even without crossing over.

During suitable low-tide conditions the shallow separation from the mainland can make the island appear walkable, but visitors should not treat this as an unrestricted crossing. Kerala Tourism states that Dharmadam Island is privately owned and that entry requires prior permission; tides, currents and weather can also make an attempted crossing unsafe. The location has older historical associations with the Dharmapattanam area and is sometimes linked in regional accounts with an early Buddhist presence.

For most travellers, the best experience is to enjoy the island as part of the Dharmadam coastal landscape, photograph it from safe viewpoints and follow local advice on access. It pairs naturally with nearby Muzhappilangad Beach in a Thalassery-area itinerary.
