Why this place stands out
Koyikkal Palace in Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram, is a 16th-century Keralam-style palace linked with Umayamma Rani and home to important folklore and numismatics museum collections.
Koyikkal Palace is a historic palace complex at Nedumangad in Thiruvananthapuram district, built in the traditional Keralam architectural style and associated with Umayamma Rani of the Venad royal lineage. Keralam Tourism dates the palace to the 16th century and highlights its present role as the setting for two specialised museums: a Folklore Museum and a Numismatics Museum. The folklore displays help visitors understand older Keralam life through musical instruments, household objects, ritual materials and other cultural artefacts, while the coin collection traces monetary history through pieces from different periods and regions.
The timberwork, sloping tiled roof and courtyard-based proportions of the palace are attractions in their own right. Koyikkal is especially useful for travellers who want a compact introduction to Keralam’s royal, social and material history outside the larger museums of Thiruvananthapuram city. Museum opening days, ticketing and photography rules should be checked before travel because government heritage-site schedules can change.
