Mattupetty Dam and Lake

Mattupetty Dam and Lake are among the classic sightseeing stops near Munnar in Idukki district. The reservoir was formed by the Mattupetty dam and sits amid the cool, green landscapes of Keralam’s high ranges. DTPC Idukki highlights the lake as a perennial water body used by birds and by wild animals that may approach the reservoir, especially in drier periods.

Boating is the main visitor activity, with organised rides providing broad views of the hills and water. Mattupetty is also associated with the Indo-Swiss livestock project, which is why the area has long been linked with cattle farming as well as tourism. The destination works well for families and general sightseers because it combines accessible scenery with an activity on the lake rather than requiring a long trek.

It is commonly included on the Munnar–Echo Point–Kundala–Top Station route, making Mattupetty an important part of the Idukki high-range tourism circuit.
