Wagon Tragedy Memorial Municipal Town Hall

Wagon Tragedy Memorial Municipal Town Hall is a heritage and remembrance site in Tirur, Malappuram district, Keralam. The Malappuram District Administration describes the hall and its monument as commemorating the Wagon Tragedy, a notorious incident during British rule. On 10 November 1921, prisoners being transferred in a closed railway goods wagon toward Coimbatore suffered mass deaths from suffocation; the district’s official account records 67 Muslim prisoners among those who died.

The memorial therefore represents one of the most sombre episodes associated with the aftermath of the 1921 Malabar uprising. Visitors come mainly to understand this history rather than for recreation. Its location in Tirur makes it easy to include with Thunchan Parambu, Thirunavaya and other cultural destinations in southern Malappuram.

The site should be approached respectfully as a memorial to lives lost and as part of the district’s complex colonial-era history.
