Thunchan Parambu

Thunchan Parambu in Tirur is one of Malappuram district's most important cultural and literary destinations. The site is traditionally identified with the birthplace of Thunchath Ezhuthachan, the poet and scholar widely honoured as the father of the Malayalam language. Today it is home to the Thunchan Memorial Trust and Research Centre, which preserves his legacy while supporting research in Malayalam and Sanskrit literature.

Visitors can explore a literary museum, library and manuscript collections, as well as the granite Saraswathi Mandapam and other cultural spaces within the serene campus. Among the most treasured associations are the ancient Kanjira tree under which Ezhuthachan is believed to have taught and composed, and the iron stylus linked with his writing tradition. Thunchan Parambu becomes especially significant on Vijayadashami, when families arrive for Vidyarambham, the ceremonial initiation of children into learning.

The annual Thunchan Festival also brings writers, scholars, poetry, discussions, music and cultural programmes to Tirur. For travellers, the destination offers a deeper understanding of Keralam's language, literary identity and educational traditions rather than a conventional sightseeing experience.
