Kerala Kalamandalam

Kerala Kalamandalam in Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur district, is a landmark institution in the preservation and teaching of Kerala’s classical performing arts. Founded in 1930 by Malayalam poet Vallathol Narayana Menon with the support of fellow cultural patrons, Kalamandalam developed on the banks of the Nila, or Bharathapuzha, and became internationally associated with Kathakali training. Today its artistic world also includes Mohiniyattam, Kutiyattam, Thullal, Nangiarkoothu, classical music and traditional percussion.

For visitors, one of the most distinctive architectural features is the traditional Koothambalam, noted for granite pillars carved with 108 karanas, or dance poses. The campus also includes the Vallathol Museum and the poet’s memorial, helping travellers connect the institution’s artistic work with the cultural revival that inspired its founding. Kerala Kalamandalam is especially rewarding for students of dance, theatre, music and Kerala heritage.
