Vadakkumnathan Temple

Vadakkumnathan Temple is one of Thrissur city’s defining heritage landmarks, standing within Thekkinkadu Maidan in the cultural heart of Kerala. Dedicated principally to Lord Shiva, the temple is renowned for traditional Kerala architecture built in wood and stone, along with mural paintings, carved wooden elements, sculptures and a Koothambalam, the classical temple theatre. Kerala Tourism also highlights the temple’s conservation work, which received an Award of Excellence in the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

The temple complex has deep importance in the cultural identity of Thrissur. The surrounding Thekkinkadu Maidan becomes the main stage for Thrissur Pooram, Kerala’s celebrated annual festival of processions, percussion ensembles, decorated elephants and ceremonial displays. Even outside festival season, the walled green setting creates a striking contrast with the busy city around it.
