Kuthiramalika Palace Museum

Kuthiramalika Palace Museum, also known as Puthenmalika or the Horse Palace, lies beside the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in East Fort, Thiruvananthapuram. The 19th-century palace was built by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, the celebrated Travancore ruler, musician and composer. Its name comes from the row of carved wooden horses that decorate the eaves, one of the most recognisable details of the building.

The palace is an outstanding example of traditional Keralam craftsmanship, with sloping roofs, courtyards, carved timber, granite, marble and finely worked interiors. Museum displays include royal furniture, paintings, ceremonial objects, musical instruments and other artefacts connected with the Travancore court. A visit works especially well as part of an East Fort heritage itinerary because the palace, temple precinct and other royal landmarks are close together.
