Marayoor

Marayoor, in Devikulam taluk of Idukki district, is one of the Munnar region’s most unusual cultural landscapes. Keralam Tourism and the Revenue Department identify the area with natural sandalwood forests, sugarcane farming, traditional jaggery production and important prehistoric remains. The famous muniyara dolmens and rock-art heritage around Marayoor and Kovilkadavu show that the valley has a story extending far beyond modern plantation tourism.

Its location in the rain-shadow side of the Western Ghats also gives the terrain a drier appearance than many other parts of Idukki, with rocky hills, farmland and forest occurring close together. Visitors can combine village scenery, heritage interpretation, local produce and views of protected sandalwood landscapes on a Marayoor trip. Nearby Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and Kanthalloor make the area part of a broader nature-and-culture circuit.

Access to protected forest areas should always follow Forest Department rules, and archaeological features should be viewed without disturbing the sites.
