Pambar River

Pambar River is an important natural feature of the Marayoor region in Idukki district, Kerala. Kerala Tourism identifies it as one of the state’s three east-flowing rivers and notes that it originates in the Anamudi hills before flowing between Marayoor and Kanthalloor. Unlike most Kerala rivers that run west towards the Arabian Sea, the Pambar ultimately drains eastwards into the larger river systems of Tamil Nadu.

The river passes through one of Idukki’s most distinctive landscapes. Marayoor combines natural sandalwood forest, sugarcane farms, prehistoric dolmens and rock art, while the Pambar also forms part of the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary ecosystem. Thoovanam Waterfalls, one of the best-known forest cascades in the area, lies on the Pambar River.

Visitors should enjoy the river from safe, publicly accessible points and avoid entering fast-flowing sections, especially during the monsoon. Marayoor lies in Devikulam taluk and uses PIN 685620. The river is best experienced as part of a broader Marayoor–Kanthalloor–Chinnar nature and heritage circuit rather than as a single developed attraction.
