Odathil Palli

Odathil Palli, also known as Odathil Mosque, is a major heritage landmark in the heart of Thalassery in Kannur district, Kerala. Kerala Tourism's Thalassery Heritage Project and DTPC Kannur associate the mosque with Moosa Kakka of the influential Keyi trading family and date its construction to around 1806. Its architecture immediately sets it apart from many later mosque forms: the building follows a strong Kerala vernacular influence, with a copper-sheeted roof, extensive teak craftsmanship, numerous windows and ornamental finials rather than prominent domes and minarets.

This design reflects the cultural exchange that shaped Thalassery during its long period as a Malabar trading centre. The mosque's location near the old commercial core makes it easy to understand in the broader context of the town's harbour, spice trade, colonial-era streets and multi-religious heritage. Odathil Palli remains an active religious site, so visitors should respect current access rules, prayer times and community customs while appreciating its historical architecture from permitted areas.
