About Ponnani Lighthouse
Ponnani Lighthouse stands near the coast at Ponnani in Malappuram district, Keralam, close to the southern side of the Bharathapuzha estuary. The Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships records that the present lighthouse was constructed during 1982–83 and commissioned on 17 April 1983. Its official history also places the structure within Ponnani’s much older maritime story, when the town functioned as a port linked to inland-water navigation and coastal trade.
Today the lighthouse forms a recognisable visual landmark near the beach, harbour and river mouth. Visitors interested in maritime history can combine it with Ponnani Beach, fishing areas and the town’s historic religious sites. Entry to the lighthouse tower, if available, depends on current Directorate rules, timings and safety conditions, so access should be checked before travel.
