Silent Valley National Park

Silent Valley National Park is a major protected rainforest landscape accessed through Mukkali in Palakkad district, Kerala. Forming part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats, the park protects exceptionally rich evergreen forest, riverine habitats and many endemic plants and animals. The Kunthipuzha River runs through the valley, while the endangered lion-tailed macaque is among the species most closely associated with Silent Valley.

Elephants, gaur, Nilgiri langurs, Malabar giant squirrels and a wide variety of birds also occur in the wider forest ecosystem. The destination is equally important in India’s conservation history because public opposition to a proposed hydroelectric project helped safeguard this rainforest and strengthened the environmental movement around Silent Valley.
