About St. Angelo's Fort

St. Angelo’s Fort, widely known as Kannur Fort, stands at Burnacherry on the coast of Kannur city and is one of North Kerala’s most important historic landmarks. The triangular laterite fort was established by the Portuguese in 1505 under Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy in India.

Control later passed to the Dutch and eventually to the British, giving the site a layered history connected with trade, naval strategy and colonial competition on the Malabar coast. Visitors can walk through the fort’s thick laterite walls, bastions, moat and surviving military structures while looking out toward the Arabian Sea and Moppila Bay. The setting gives the monument both architectural interest and strong scenic appeal, especially for travellers interested in Kerala history, coastal landscapes and photography.

Kerala Tourism identifies the fort as a protected historic attraction in Kannur, and its location close to the city makes it practical to combine with Payyambalam Beach, Arakkal Kettu and other nearby heritage sites. Visitors should respect monument rules and any access restrictions in force at the time of their visit.
