About Thrissur Zoo and State Museum
Thrissur Zoo and State Museum is a historic public institution at Chembukkavu in the heart of Thrissur city, Kerala. The Kerala Department of Museums and Zoos traces the Thrissur zoo complex to 1885 and describes a compact campus that has traditionally combined animal exhibits with museum and garden experiences. Kerala Tourism has highlighted the site’s zoological collection as well as its botanical garden, natural-history and art-museum components, making it a familiar family and educational destination for generations of Thrissur residents and visitors.
The wider zoo system is currently undergoing a major transition because the Government of Kerala has developed the much larger Thrissur Zoological Park at Puthur and has been shifting animals from the old city zoo to the new facility. For that reason, the Chembukkavu site should be approached primarily as the historic State Museum and Zoo complex, and visitors should check official information for the latest animal displays and access arrangements. Its central location also makes it easy to combine with nearby cultural attractions in Thrissur city.
