Varkala Cliff

Varkala Cliff forms the elevated coastal edge above Varkala Beach in Thiruvananthapuram district and is one of the defining landscapes of Keralam’s southern shoreline. The exposed sedimentary layers are associated with the Varkala Formation and have been recognised for their geological importance by the Geological Survey of India. From the cliff-top, visitors get broad Arabian Sea views, especially around sunset, while paths connect cafés, small shops, accommodation and access points leading down toward Papanasam and neighbouring beaches.

Natural springs emerging from parts of the cliff have also been linked with Varkala’s traditional identity. The cliff is not merely a scenic backdrop: it is a fragile geological landform affected by erosion, heavy rain and coastal processes. Visitors should therefore remain behind safety barriers, avoid unstable edges and respect any temporary closures.

In 2025 the Varkala cliff landscape was also included on UNESCO’s Tentative List, adding international recognition to its existing geological and tourism importance.
