Mishkal Masjid is a major historic mosque in the Kuttichira quarter of Kozhikode, Keralam. Keralam Tourism describes the mosque as more than 650 years old and attributes its construction to the Arab trader Nakhooda Mishkal. The building is especially notable for its extensive use of timber and for an architectural language that differs from the domed and minaret-based form commonly associated with many mosques.
Traditional Keralam influences can be seen in the layered roof form, carved wooden elements and gopuram-like entrance details. Keralam Tourism also records that the mosque was originally taller and was damaged during a Portuguese attack in the 16th century before being restored. That history, together with the building’s continued religious role, makes Mishkal Masjid both a place of worship and an important record of Kozhikode’s maritime and cultural connections.
The surrounding Kuttichira heritage area contains old mosques, the Kuttichira pond and traditional neighbourhood architecture, so the masjid is best experienced as part of a wider heritage walk. Visitors should dress respectfully, avoid disrupting prayer and follow any access instructions at the site.
