About Chowwannur Burial Cave

Chowwannur Burial Cave is a megalithic rock-cut burial monument at Chowwannur near Kunnamkulam in Thrissur district, Kerala. It is a Monument of National Importance under the Archaeological Survey of India and represents the prehistoric and Iron Age burial traditions found across the Thrissur region. Archaeological descriptions note a recessed entrance on the eastern side, a roughly circular chamber with a hemispherical vault, stone benches along the northern and southern sides, and circular blocks along the western side that may have supported vessels or grave goods.

The monument is compact, but its value lies in showing how burial spaces were cut directly into laterite and designed for ritual use centuries before Kerala’s better-known historic monuments. Visitors interested in archaeology, ancient technology and early settlement history will find it especially meaningful. As a protected site, it should be visited without climbing, scratching or disturbing the rock surfaces, and local or ASI access rules should be respected.
