Why this place stands out
Kovalam Palace, or Halcyon Castle, is a 1932 Travancore royal retreat in Kovalam, Thiruvananthapuram, now associated with heritage hospitality and the early history of the beach resort.
Kovalam Palace is the popular name for Halcyon Castle, a heritage building erected in 1932 at Kovalam in Thiruvananthapuram district, Keralam. According to Keralam Tourism, the castle was built by M. R.
Ry. Sri Rama Varma Valiya Koil Thampuran, consort of Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore, as a retreat for the royal family. The building is therefore closely connected with the period when Kovalam began to develop a reputation as a desirable coastal getaway.
Its architecture and royal associations provide a historical layer to a destination otherwise best known for beaches and modern tourism. The property has subsequently been incorporated into a heritage hospitality setting rather than functioning as a conventional public museum, so access may depend on current property arrangements. Even when viewed as part of the wider Kovalam landscape, the palace helps visitors understand the connection between Travancore history and the emergence of the area as one of Keralam’s best-known seaside destinations.
