About Palakkad Fort
Palakkad Fort stands in the centre of Palakkad town and is one of the district’s most recognisable heritage monuments. The granite fort was built by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1766, reflecting Palakkad’s strategic position between the Keralam coast and the Tamil plains through the Palakkad Gap. British forces later took control and modified the fort in 1790.
Today the monument is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and remains notable for its strong ramparts, broad moat and compact defensive plan. A Hanuman temple stands near the main entrance, and the landscaped grounds around the fort make the site pleasant for a slow heritage walk. Because it sits within the city rather than in a remote archaeological zone, Palakkad Fort is easy to combine with local markets, Kalpathy and other urban attractions.
The site helps visitors understand the military and political importance of Palakkad during the Mysore and British periods while also serving as one of the best-preserved historic structures in this part of Keralam.
