Kottukal Cave Temple

Kottukal Cave Temple, also called Kaltrikkovil, is a rare rock-cut temple at Kottukal village in Ittiva Panchayat, Kollam district, Keralam. DTPC Kollam dates the monument broadly between the sixth and eighth centuries CE, while historical tradition associates its development with the seventh century. The name Kottukal is linked to the idea of carved rock, an apt description for a shrine hewn directly into a massive rock formation.

The complex contains two irregular east-facing caves, with a Ganapathy sculpture between them, and also includes Shaiva elements such as a Shiva linga and Nandi. An old well and mandapam add further interest. The temple now comes under the Travancore Devaswom Board and remains a place of worship, set amid a broad paddy-field landscape.

Visitors can appreciate both archaeological form and active religious tradition, but should respect rituals and avoid touching or climbing on historic carved surfaces.
